With the explosive growth of cloud-native application development including Generative AI containers have become an essential component of modern IT infrastructure. Unfortunately, in the rush to move quickly, operations can often become siloed with various teams deploying solutions to meet their needs. The result is often known as “shadow IT,” and it can potentially result in increased costs and security risks, along with difficulty in resiliency and scaling. The good news is Nutanix has a solution and Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pro and Ultimate customers already have access to it as part of their existing licenses.

The Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) solution provides the same benefits as NCI in a single unified platform that allows you to manage VMs and containers side by side without the need for specialized training. NKP works with any CNFC-conformant Kubernetes® runtime, simplifying operations, removing silos, and streamlining updates and patches to maintain security and resiliency. In short, NKP allows Nutanix customers to use a platform they are already familiar with to create a cohesive and consistent Kubernetes solution for their entire organization.

There has been a lot of interest in NKP from Nutanix customers, and that has led to some common questions. Below are answers to the most-commonly asked questions we've received.

Common Questions About NKP Functionality

What is Nutanix Kubernetes Platform Starter?

Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) Starter is your fast and easy way to get started with KubernetesⓇ on Nutanix. Included with the NCI Pro and Ultimate licenses, NKP Starter delivers core functionality like:

  • Load balancing
  • Simple Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) with Single Sign-On (SSO)
  • Persistent storage
  • Rocky Linux OS is included
  • Deployment on Nutanix AHV hypervisor running on NCI
  • A built-in management dashboard - making it simple to deploy and manage clusters right out the gate.

Here is a full list of functionalities.

Does NKP Starter support stateful applications?

Yes. NKP Starter includes Nutanix CSI Driver for providing persistent storage on NCI.

What if I want to deploy my custom application(s) on NKP?

NKP is pure upstream Kubernetes, giving you full compatibility with any other CNCF-compatible Kubernetes and the ability to deploy your own containerized apps. If it works on Kubernetes, it works on NKP!

Does NKP Starter include a management console?

Yes. NKP Starter includes the NKP dashboard, where you can create and view your Kubernetes clusters.

Does NKP Starter upgrade the Kubernetes version and its tools?

Yes. NKP provides easy upgrades for the entire managed Kubernetes stack. No need to check compatibility matrices and test individual components – a single command brings you the latest and greatest functionality.

Common Questions About Licensing

Now that you know more about the functionality, you may be wondering where NKP fits into your current infrastructure, or how it works alongside public cloud and other Kubernetes services. This section breaks down what’s possible with NKP Starter.

How many NKP Starter clusters can I run?

You can run as many Kubernetes clusters as you would like on Nutanix AHV with NKP Starter.

What NKP license do I need to manage all of my Kubernetes clusters?

You can manage as many clusters as you’d like – no difference in NKP license editions.  NKP Pro adds additional operational tools and capabilities that make it easy to operate containerized apps in production, while NKP Ultimate brings powerful fleet management and cost management tools, making it easy to manage distributed or diffuse Kubernetes clusters. While NKP Starter is only supported on Nutanix AHV, NKP Pro and Ultimate can be used to manage Kubernetes clusters on-prem running on AHV, VMware vSphere, or bare-metal and cloud-based clusters in AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. NKP also supports the deployment and management of AWS EKS and Microsoft AKS clusters.

What are the differences between NKP Starter, NKP Pro, and NKP Ultimate licenses?

NKP starter is the easiest way for Nutanix customers to get started running Kubernetes on Nutanix. NKP Pro offers additional capabilities, providing an enterprise-ready stack ready to take applications in a cluster to production. NKP Ultimate includes all NKP Pro features and enables true Kubernetes fleet management for clusters running on-premises, in the cloud or anywhere.

Can I upgrade from Starter to Pro or Ultimate?

Yes! As your needs evolve, you can seamlessly upgrade to NKP Pro or Ultimate, which offer advanced features like multicloud support, bare-metal deployment, vSphere support, and even integration with managed Kubernetes services like EKS and AKS, all without needing to redeploy your existing clusters.

Common Questions around Infrastructure

Can I use NKP with public cloud infrastructure providers like AWS, Azure, and GCP?

  • NKP Starter only supports deployments on Nutanix AHV.
  • NKP Pro and NKP Ultimate support public cloud deployments on AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform as well as on-premises deployments with Nutanix AHV, VMware vSphere, and bare-metal.

Do I require Nutanix to deploy NKP?

NKP Starter can only be deployed on a Nutanix environment with the Nutanix AHV hypervisor. NKP Pro and Ultimate can be deployed anywhere without the requirement of a Nutanix environment. Nutanix Cloud Platform is an ideal infrastructure to run any containerized workloads on, providing enterprise data services to all workloads and combined with NKP you can centralize and simplify the full-stack management of your VMs and containers.

Ready to Simplify Kubernetes?

Navigating your Kubernetes journey doesn’t have to be complicated, especially with the right tools in place. NKP Starter delivers essential functionality, flexibility, and ease of use to help you get up and running quickly, while still leaving room to scale and grow with Pro or Ultimate as your needs evolve.
